The Economy Of Security - Observations From Middle America

It has been said that everything has its price but does this truly apply to security systems?

To be fair and balanced we should of course remember that every corporation or government entity is ultimately run by imperfect human beings that must make decisions based on real world financial limitations.

With that in mind, below are some recent observations from my small town:

This morning I heard on the local news that an elderly pedestrian was hit and killed just four blocks from my home by a police car over the weekend. The police car did not have an in car camera installed. The accident happened in a city where revenue generating Red Light cameras have been installed for years. Several eye witnesses have already disputed the officer’s claim that he had his lights and siren on as he traveled at high speed down the road in response to a call from assistance from a fellow officer. Unfortunately the lack of an in car camera will undoubtedly lead to countless allegations and denials in the wake of this life shattering and life ending tragedy.

Microsoft to deliver Vista online

As reported by theage.com 01/19/07

Microsoft will make its new Vista operating system available for download via the Internet when it debuts at the end of this month, a marketing first for the US software colossus.

Microsoft has sold its world-dominating software only on packaged disks since the Redmond, Washington, company opened for business in 1975.

Microsoft has been ramping up Vista promotion efforts in preparation for the January 30th launch of the version tailored to home PCs. A grand Vista event is planned in New York City on the eve of the launch.

On Wednesday, Microsoft revealed Windows Anytime Upgrade, Family Discount, and online Marketplace options it claimed gave customers "greater flexibility" in obtaining its redesigned operating system.

"With the consumer launch of Windows Vista so close, we're excited to announce three new ways to make the purchase and upgrade experience easier than ever," said Microsoft marketing manager Brad Brooks.

The Anytime option will enable people to upgrade their Windows operating systems to Vista online directly from Microsoft or its authorized partners, according to Microsoft.

Suggest prices for upgrades ranged from 79 US dollars (US) to 199 US dollars, depending on which editions of the software are involved.

Anytime online upgrades will be available in Europe, Japan, Canada and the United States at www.windowsanytimeupgrade.com when Vista debuts at the end of January, Microsoft said.

Vista and the new 2007 Microsoft Office software will be available for direct download from Windows Marketplace. Only English-language editions of Vista will be available at Marketplace, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft added that it would offer "family discounts" on Vista software for homes with multiple computers.

Intel Grows As Microprocessors Shrink

According to recent financial data the Santa Clara chipmaker is doing much better than in years past.

In addition to reaping the benefits of job cuts Intel also announced a new record in the total sales of microprocessor units.

Going forward Intel is optimistic about its next generation 45nm process technology that is scheduled to go into production in the second half of 2007.

ComputerServiceNow.com (an authorized Dell Reseller and a member of the Tech-Army.org) reports their sales of Intel based workstations are up and are hopeful the trend will continue as Intel struggles to keep it's recently acquired lead over rival AMD in the ongoing microprocessor wars.

Maximum PC just ran an article called "10 Reasons Not To Upgrade To Windows Vista At This Time."

They list the following abbreviated reasons why it’s not a good move just yet.

1. Vista requires a fairly powerful machine.
2. Application incompatibilities
3. Vista is very expensive.
4. No hardware audio.
5. Vista doesn't work with a lot of bleeding –edge hardware. (Due to lack of drivers.)
6. Vista doesn't work well with some games.
7. Vista includes consumer-unfriendly Digital Rights Management.
8. Overall poor driver support.
9. Vista is kind of annoying (referring to User Account Control and Security Alerts).
