R.I.P. Floppy Disks

R.I.P. Floppy Disks

I was cleaning out some old stuff the other day and ran across a box that contained every disc and set of instructions for every bit of software and every single laptop I've bought over the last few years. But when I dug a little deeper, I found a huge pile of little black 3.5-inch floppy disks. Instantly, memories of old college and high school papers came flooding back as I sorted through them and saw labels such as "Shakespeare," "Mrs. Yates's Class" and "English 101." I was tempted to take a look into my past, especially when I found one called "story," which I'm pretty sure contained what I thought was gonna be the Great American Novel at one time. I've been telling myself I was going to get the data off of them for years anyway. But there was one small problem. My laptop doesn't read those types of disks. As a matter of fact, the one I had before this one didn't either.

It seems as though Sony has also noticed just how irrelevant those little 3.5-inch disks are. The company announced that it will end sales of the disks in Japan in March 2011, eleven months from now. Sony Tokyo has been shipping the disks since 1983, but in recent years, they have become almost obsolete. As I mentioned, many computers don't even have disk drives anymore and people have turned to cloud computing or USB drives for storage purposes.

Actually, Lance Ulanof of PC Magazine, says this is yet another reason to move your important information to cloud, because eventually, other types of storage will become obsolete,

"The fact is that storage mediums and the drives that read and write them are not permanent like Mt. Rushmore. Instead, they're more like our sandy beaches, which seem permanent but are slowly but surely washing out to sea. One day you'll come back for a swim and they'll be gone entirely."

A Free Version of Microsoft Office?

Microsoft Office To Be Free Soon

Will Microsoft Office soon be free? Sorta. The company has announced that they will be allowing computer makers to bundle a special version of the product into new PCs, starting with Office 2010. The planned program, Office Starter 2010, will replace Microsoft Works.

Chris Capossela, senior vice president of Microsoft, told CNET that the new software will feature scaled-back versions of Word and Excel, and while it's free, will include advertising. Ads will change ever 45 seconds and all be for Office itself, not other content. The ads will not scan the content of your documents, but will simply encourage you to upgrade to Microsoft Office.

Capossela also told CNET that Word will be "capable of opening and displaying even the most complex documents."

On the other hand, according to CNET, Office Starter won't have the ability to "use macros, create automated tables of contents, or add comments, though they will see comments added by others."

To get more features, you would have to upgrade to the paid version of Office 2010 and Microsoft is not only using advertisements to encourage that but including codes that will make it easier for users to upgrade. All new PCs will have the codes embedded so users can simply upgrade with a new product key card.

Microsoft hopes that over 80% of PC users will have Office Starter soon, but Capossela told CNET that it would really be up to the computer makers. Right now, many PCs have a combination of Microsoft Works and a trial version of Office 2007 and those computers will probably be on the shelves through this fall. Read more about the new product at CNET.

Orlando Computer Service Customer Testimonial

When I opened my real estate office in Orlando, I was very careful about security. I had an alarm system installed, and even had a couple of security cameras put in the office. I knew if anything went wrong, I'd rather be safe than sorry. My entire life was riding on it. I'd just quit my job with a large real estate company to start my own business and I had everything, including my life's savings, to lose.

Unfortunately, something I didn't take too seriously was computer security. I took advantage of some company's 30-day trial virus software but when the trial ran out, I didn't bother to have it renewed. I'm always careful where I click and which emails I open and encourage my employees to be, as well. With all that in mind, I never thought twice about someone ruining my company through our computer network.

Needless to say, within three months, we had a virus. I don't know how or where it came from but I did know that I needed to do something about it and quick. My office is pretty small and I don't have a technician or anyone like that on my team. I panicked!

Luckily, a friend suggested ComputerServiceNow.com. I was able to put in a call to a Tech Travel Agent, let her know what I needed, when and where, and a technician was at my office the next day. He not only fixed my security threat and saved my information (and maybe even my business), but he gave me some great instructions on how to prevent this from happening in the future.

Now I keep an anti-virus program current and running on every computer in my office. I send out monthly reminders to staff about downloading only from trusted sources. I also use a firewall and keep our Windows downloads up to date. All because the technician from ComputerServiceNow.com took the time to educated me after he was finished taking care of our problem.

- James Derringer, Real Estate Agent in Orlando, Florida

Texas Computer Service

Not only is Texas the second largest state in the nation, but it also has more Fortune 500 companies' headquarters than any other state in the country, as well. With large companies such as AT&T, Whole Foods, Blockbuster, Dell, and ExxonMobil and large cities such as Houston and Dallas (the fourth and sixth largest in the country, respectively), people are flocking to the state to open new businesses. The "Lone Star State" leads the nation in a number of industries. It has the largest number of farms in the United States, leading the nation in livestock, sheep and goat products, and cotton production. Energy is also big business in Texas; the state's petroleum deposits make up the fourth largest reserve in the country and it is also home to the Baytown Refinery, the largest refinery in the United States. It also leads the nation in wind power, solar power, and natural gas production. Texas is home to some of the best technology in the world, including several leaders in the aeronautics industry. The state's economy is rounded out with a strong presence in the retail, wholesale, banking, insurance, and construction industries.

Data Recovery Service

Data Recovery Service

If your hardware has malfunctioned and you need to salvage valuable data, Computer Service Now can help you with our Data Recovery Service.

Data recovery is the process of retrieving data from damaged, corrupted, or inaccessible primary storage media such as hard drives, storage tapes, CDs, DVDs, solid state drives, and other electronics, when there is a problem that prevents it from being accessed normally. The most common reason people need this type of service is when there is damage to a file system, caused by a power outage, hardware issues or system crashes.

Most operation systems come with a repair tool. Microsoft has chkdsk and Mac has Disk Utility that can help with small data issues, but they don't always work for every problem. When the storage device has been damaged or someone needs to retrieve secured, deleted information, the need for an data recovery expert is needed.

If you have a damaged, corrupt, or failed system in need of data recovery and you can't seem to fix the problem yourself, Computer Service now technicians are on standby, ready and waiting to help. They are trained in data recovery and can help you recover the data you need. For more information or to get a quote, call 877-422-1907 or email us at sales@csn1.com. Or you can visit our website Computer Service Now.

On-Site Computer Service Testimonial – Nashville

My name is Christine Silva and I am the office manager for a doctor's office near Nashville, Tennessee. One Friday night last spring, a tornado came roaring through our area and caused quite a bit of damage. While our office was spared any major damage outside, our computer network was struck by lightning. Despite the use of a surge protector, we went into the office on Monday, prepared for what we thought would be just another day of business, only to find our entire system was down! I knew patients would soon be filing in for their appointments, expecting us to be to be on top of the most delicate details of their lives and even though we do keep a lot of our information backed up as a precautionary measure, we have come to rely heavily on the convenience of our computer system.

Of course, I didn't have time to take our entire network to the local repair shop, so I decided to call Computer Service Now. According to their website, www.computerservicenow.com , they offer on-site computer repair. I made a quick call and they were able to have a technician out to the office by 10:30 A.M., just two hours after I put in the call. Within half an hour, the technician had our network up and running again. Aside from the basic programs we use here in the office, I'm not exactly knowledgeable when it comes to computers, so I couldn't explain exactly what the technician did, but I do know he worked quickly and efficiently and we were able to pull up our patients' files by lunchtime. He also saved us a lot of money as we were so afraid we were going to have to purchase new equipment. Oh, and he even gave me some tips on how to prevent future damage from lightning strikes.

Working with Computer Service Now was one of the best experiences I've ever had with any computer problem I've had both personally and professionally. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is need of any type of computer service!
