A lightning strike in Dublin recently took down service for some European users of Amazon and Microsoft’s cloud services. In addition to that, Amazon also suffered a stateside cloud outage that affected popular services including Foursquare, Reddit and Netflix.
According to the service dashboard of Amazon, the company’s Elastic Computer Cloud, or EC2, and Relational Database Service (RDS) both experienced a service disruption in Northern Virginia yesterday. However, service was restored for both services, though the outage did affect some high-profile users.
According to a tweet from Netflix, “We’re aware that some members are experiencing issues streaming movies and TV shows. We’re working to resolve the problem.” About two hours after the tweet was posted the problems were completely resolved.
Reddit also reported “issues communicating with Amazon EC2”. Last night the company also tweeted that “Amazon’s US-EAST data centers have all dropped off the internet.” Reddit regained service nearly 11 hours ago, however, at that point Reddit said that it had yet to hear any updates on the situation from Amazon.
The tweets kept on coming last night as Foursquare also added to the twitter stream saying, “We’re currently down due to the Amazon EC2 outage.” Foursquare’s service came back online last night as well, along with everybody else, just after 11 p.m.
According to CRN, the issues happened after Amazon network traffic was “executed incorrectly.” Traffic, as opposed to switching to another router, went to a lower capacity network. This, in turn, took down several servers in Northern Virginia.
As I mentioned earlier, a lightning strike close to an Amazon data center in Ireland caused an explosion as well as a fire which knocked out utility service and left it unable to start any generators. This resulted in a complete power outage. Hosted online services from Microsoft were offline for almost four hours which prevented access to services due to a “power issue”.
The good news is that everything is up and running as usual so users of Amazon, Netflix, Reddit, Foursquare, Microsoft’s cloud and any other affected services shouldn’t have anything to worry about. If you are still experiencing difficulties or problems, you should contact the company because your problems may be something else entirely.
